Power systems
Seahorse Point is 100% off-grid, powered by solar panels with backup generators. A chargeverter connects the generators to the inverters; this allows low-cost generators to be used without fear of damaging the inverter with power spikes.
Wood-working shed system
This is a small solar system with several solar panels and 200 amp 24V DC lithium batteries. A large inverter has been installed to facilitate the starting of a circular saw or any heavy machinery. The woodshed system also provides power to the composting toilet, and Coco Cabana. Two of the generators are located in the shed.

Lightning protection and grounding
Panama does experience many lightning incidents; while the chances of receiving a direct strike are less than 1 in 2000, there is always a potential risk. Many people advocate removing the grounding or earthing systems to disconnect your house/facilities from lightning entering your house from a nearby ground strike. This is best described as nonsense and stupid as well as very dangerous. There are very few companies with any knowledge of lightning or indeed electrical systems in Bocas Del Toro. A good electrical earth ground is essential for electrical safety and as part of your lightning protection.
At Seahorse Point we have the following systems.
2 x lightning conductors, aerial Frankyn electrodes at the highest points, connected using 2 AWG cable to 3 x 8 ft long rods hammered into the ground. The rods are also connected to metal pipes and the facility’s earthing system. The objective is to have the house and ground all at the same electrical potential and avoid side flashes. All major junctions are also fitted with surge protectors designed to divert the high energy from a lightning strike to ground.
While the systems will help to minimise the risk of a direct lightning strike, in the event that it happens, the systems will minimise the fire risk and potential damage.
